Lease a Car: Half of speed cameras 'not operational'
27 January 2011
Those leasing a car may be interested to hear that at any one time, over half of speed cameras on roads across England and Wales do not work.
Research by Which? revealed that less than 47 per cent of speed cameras are actually operational at a certain time.
Furthermore, there is a variation among those who lease cars being caught speeding on the nation's roads depending on which county they are actually located in.
That is because while all 60 cameras in Sussex are in working condition, just ten per cent out of 287 sites in Lancashire are functional.
However, Peter Rodger, chief examiner with the Institute of Advanced Motorists, pointed out that the sight of a yellow box is enough to cut speed in those who lease a car.
He added: "Cameras cost a lot of money to install and maintain and for that reason there have always been more boxes than cameras."
Recently, road safety minister Mike Penning revealed proposals which could see drivers receiving information about speed cameras in their area.
